0.2.20110410_0

It’s update time, again. 0.2.20110410_0.

- Map generation is now asynchronous. This means that the delays in block placement, inventory and in the transfer of chunks while the world is generating are gone.
- Now the new object system is mainly used. This doesn’t affect gameplay a lot, as it is mainly a technical development which allows stuff to be done in the future. Anyway, I re-implemented the rats in the new system too, just to test it, and modified their behavior a bit. They can be found in dark places in newly created worlds. Old rats in old worlds use the old system.

EDIT: The windows version didn’t work at first at all. Now it does work.

The download page

EDIT2: I am getting glitches like this on the windows version, does anyone else? They don’t appear on my brother’s computer with Windows XP.

I tried out the windows version on Windows 7 32bit Pro. I didn’t get any glitches like the one shown.

First this is great that this project is continuing!!!
    It already lock very interesting!
Minetest is coded in C++ and for me this is great advantage.
The problem is that for now it lock too close to Minecraft!!!
My hope was that it will go in direction with better graphics.
It would be better if this “game” would have better texture resolutions as 16×16.
Support for GLSL post FX would be great too.

But the main point is that the Blocks and Items should be easy to customize, witch little (or no) programming knowledge.

I lick to code in C++, and already have locked to the code.
But it was hard to figure out how to add new Block types.

One way could be to use Lua Scripts or simple config files for defining Blocks and Items properties.
This way the new Item or Blocks should be easy to add or to change.

I’m running it on Windows 7 64 bit and nothing is visible. Everything is blue, until you click. For example, if your looking down and trying to break a dirt block, it will appear but only the side you are hitting. Inventory does show.

P.S. I’m using a ATI 5750 if that helps at all

Im also running on win7 x64 and have no problems. I have an Nvidia graphics card.

Hey, looks promising! I tried to build the source on Ubuntu 11.04 using your build instructions, it looked to be complaining quite a bit during the make process but completed. Now It crashes when starting a world. Here is the last few lines of my CL output:

I hope to see more of this project!

when I drag items such as torches or pickaxes out of the crafting area after crafting them, they duplicate in some instances.

  8. celeron55 Says:

I have added the fixes to Z’s and crysys’s problems to this page: http://celeron.55.lt/~celeron55/minetest/common_problems

  9. celeron55 Says:

v3t: There indeed are some problems in crafting – I will try to fix them before the next release.

  10. gnarvin Says:

Hey I was just running around in your game, and first I want to say Great Job. Now I just want to run through some of the bugs I encountered. When crafting if I’m making torches and I click the torches being made then left click where I want them in the inv then I get 8 torches (twice the amount your suppose to get, right click gives you 5 torches( 1 more then your suppose to get). Also if you click a spot thats already occupied by accident it just replaces the item.

Also I had some wired graphic glitches, when my mouse would go over certain spots in the terrain than I would get these weird black lines all over my screen.( I could go back and get some screen shots or record a short video if you would like to see it in more detail.

IMO the unlimited up and down distance is a bit much, I personal liked being able to reach the bottom and tops of the earth, tho I do think you should set them higher then minecraft.

    Sounds would be awesome too.

Thats all I can remember off the top of my head, but great job so far tho, keep up the great work.

Ps – A forum would probably be a big help for reporting bugs and what not.

  11. celeron55 Says:

gnarvin (and other people too): Some people have suggested me to set up a forum, but there is one problem with that: I can’t host it myself because it’d probably cause too much traffic. I’ve already set up quite much all that my server and connection can handle.

So, go ahead and suggest some dependable free forum hosts.

There seems to be amazing potential for texture packs as an image of nearly any size works. here is an example texture pack I made: http://www.mediafire.com/?ovh0oxt0n0oii8t
you can just back up the data folder and then drag and drop these in. I made the images 512×512 because 1024×1024 wouldn’t work for me.

  13. gnarvin Says:

Well I was about to say Reddit, but I see there is one already set up. You should just link to that on the site and tell people to post ideas and bugs there. Seem to work wonders for minecraft.

What necessary words… super, a remarkable idea.

  16. McFerson Says:

May be you should allow users to configure the movment keys, even ALL keys.
“WASD” is ONLY for qwerty keyboard.

And you should, again, try (not vital ;) ) to support original maps and/or server (i.e. : playing on a minecraft server with your client or import an minecraft map to minetest c55).

  17. Lesarthois Says:

I tried it for 30 minutes. Lots of improvements need to be done, but Open source means people will eventually start to make lots of mods and improvements you could include inside.
    There is two things I think you should mod;
First, allowing the use of the arrow keys.
I don’t get the point into using letters. It must be a cultural thing, I never saw any European PC game using letters keys, always the arrow keys.
And getting used to use the keys… Wow. I can’t stop hitting the arrows keys when playing C55.
I don’t mind if the game come with WASD, as long as you can use the arrow keys.

And second, allowing the change of the key ingame.
It’s a bit boring to quit the game everytme just because you don’t remember which key do what.

Anyway, I’ll keep an eye on Minetest C55. There is a lot of work to do something as good as Minecraft actually is, but it certainly can be done ;3

And what a pleasure to see Minetest running on my old laptop . Dell D410, and goddamit Intel 910/915 GPU. Minetest run at 10 FPS, but with all the graphical options on.
    Not smooth, but playable correctly.
Minecraft 1.6 was shaggy even on low options, and 1.7 doesn’t work on this GPU :/
